TANZANIA: Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Olduvai Gorge with extension to Zanzibar – 10 nights PDF Print E-mail
Lake Manyara National Park

Located beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life, and breathtaking views. The alkaline soda of Lake Manyara is home to an incredible array of bird life that thrives on its brackish waters. Pink flamingo stoop and graze by the thousands, colourful specks against the grey minerals of the lakeshore. Yellow-billed storks swoop and corkscrew on thermal winds rising up from the escarpment, and herons flap their wings against the sun-drenched sky. Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay this park a visit. 2 ½ hours drive from Arusha. Best time: Throughout the year.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti is easily Tanzania’s most famous national park, and it’s also the largest, at 14,763 km2 of protected area. Large prides of lions laze easily in the long grasses, plentiful families of elephants feed on acacia bark and trump to each other across the plains, and giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland, and the whole range of African wildlife is in awe-inspiring numbers. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara attract visitors from around the world, who flock to the open plains to witness the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet. More than a million animals make the seasonal journey to fresh pasture to the north, then the south, after the biannual rains. The sound of their thundering hooves, raising massive clouds of thick red dust, has become one of the legends of the Serengeti plains. Aside from traditional vehicle bound safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become a safari rite-of-passage for travel enthusiasts. 6 hours drive from Arusha. Best time: June to November.

Ngorongoro Crater

Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino returns to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing on dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Just outside the crater’s ridge, tall Masaai herd their cattle and goats over green pastures through the highland slopes. Ngorongoro Conservation Area includes its eponymous famous crater, Olduvai Gorge, and huge expanses of highland plains, scrub bush, and forests that cover approximately 8300 square kilometres. A protected area, only indigenous tribes such as the Masaai are allowed to live within its borders. Of course, the crater itself, actually a type of collapsed volcano called a caldera, is the main attraction. 4 hours drive from Arusha and 2 hours from Lake Manyara. Avoid the rainy season, April, May and November.

Olduvai Gorge:

The renowned Olduvai Gorge lies between the great wildlife sanctuaries of the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti National Park. This is where the Leakeys discovered the hominoid remains of a 1.8 million year old skeleton of Australopithecus boisei, one of the distinct links of the human evolutionary chain.

Zanzibar known as “Spice Island” is approximately 85 km long and 30 km wide. Like most other Indian Ocean Islands, the monsoon season begins in early March and lasts until the end of May but for the rest of the year hot sunny temperatures are the norm, ranging from 26 – 28 C (80 – 83 F).

Perfect white beaches encompass the island and there are many hotels to suit all types of travellers ranging from exclusive villas to back packing accommodation. Many of the luxury hotels now offer health spas.

Stone Town, the capital is a historical town and very traditional. Take time to wander through the alleyways admiring centuries old architecture; visit one of the many fine restaurants serving Asian, Arabic, European and Western cuisine. Alternatively take a short walk to the harbour and watch the fishing boats return or just sit under one of the many beautiful Indian almond trees and watch the world go by.

Zanzibar has many excursions for clients such as swimming with the dolphins, Jozani Forest (for Colobus Monkeys), Spice tours, Dhow cruises, hire motorbikes, snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing.

Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge ***

Standing high on the bluff of a dramatic ochre and terracotta streaked cliff above the flamingo-frosted expanse of Lake Manyara’s gleaming alkaline waters, the Lodge commands panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor of the Great Rift Valley. Designed to reflect the brilliance of Lake Manyara’s unique birdlife, the Lodge draws on an inspirational architectural motif that melds swooping avian curves with the gentle concentric patterns of traditional Maasai ‘Bomas’ (encampments) whilst the vibrantly coloured frescoes lining the walls are designed to depict the colourful intricacy of bird migratory patterns. The ambiance of the Lodge is a fusion of lakeside tranquillity, towering volcanic splendour and adventure-packed sporting activity.

DAY 3: Depart from Lake Manyara and drive to the Serengeti National Park for game viewing. Full board accommodation in the Serengeti National Park at the Serengeti Safari Lodge for 2 nights.

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge ****
Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views over the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti, the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class style. Drawing its inspiration from the circular ‘Rondavel’ dwellings and winding paths of a traditional Maasai village, the Lodge features thickly-thatched, stone-built rooms, spaciously set amongst groves of indigenous trees that are cooled by sparkling streams and papyrus-fringed ponds.

The circular bar, its roof supported by massive carven figures of warriors, maidens and elders, looks out over the sky-blue, ‘vanishing horizon’ swimming pool towards the miles of lion-gold savannah that lie below, wherein is enacted the thunderous theatre of the million-strong wildebeest migration. As for views, from lilac-streaked sunrise, to diamond-domed night, the sensational Serengeti delivers a series of timeless volcanic vistas that are second to none.

DAY 4: Day spent in Serengeti.

DAY 5: Final game drive in the Serengeti heading towards Olduvai Gorge for sight seeing where a packed lunch will be served. Proceed to Ngorongoro Crater. 2 Nights NgoroNgoro Serena Safari Lodge.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge ****

Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. The interior, radiating out from the primeval log fire glowing at the heart of the Lodge, blends the concentrated hush of a game-viewing hide with the ochre, rust and charcoal images of a prehistoric cavern. Lit by flaming wall-lanterns, clad in gigantic volcanic boulders and decorated by the iron spears, bright-beaded robes and intricately carven artefacts of the Maasai, the Lodge is a unique blend of world-class luxury, timeless volcanic splendour and ethnic style. As for the views, from lilac-streaked sunrise, to indigo star-studded night, the immeasurably ancient Ngorongoro Crater delivers a theatre of vistas, most unchanged since the dawn of time.
